As
of June 2004, the ABS estimated
that more than 1.25 million small businesses were
operating
in Australia. More than half of them were
non-employing businesses, while only third employed between
one to four people.
Home
based small businesses make up a very large proportion
majority of the total small businesses population in Australia, representing more
than 60%
of all small businesses in Australia while operating
across a wide range of sectors and face a unique set of challenges
by being home based.
In
the past year, more than 10,000 new businesses registration took
place in Australia every
month. Yet, when it comes to
small businesses, statistics shows that approximately 10%
of small businesses cease operating in their first 2 years
of commencing operation. Over the two-year period 2003-2004
and 2004-2005, more then 20,000 businesses ceased
operating all over Australia (ITSA 2005). The ABS
has also indicated that 68% of Australian small businesses
operating today will not exist ten years from
now (2003 report*).
